Hostmother, performer, author and icon of Englishness – Mrs Joyce Hoover extends the hand of international friendship.

Mrs Hoover anf her students

Mrs. Joyce Hoover is ‘Brighton’s leading landlady’. Nowadays, with the decline of the traditional British seaside holiday, she mainly caters for overseas students on English language courses, and she has a lot to say on the subject of British identity, British culture, and the importance of learning “proper English”. Over tea and biscuits (no extra charge) she shares with the audience her experience of three decades of cost-conscious catering, sets out her recipe for successful language learning and speaks up passionately for native speakers.
Mrs. Hoover writes:

“The visitors who stay with me have come to improve their English by rubbing up against the people who spoke it first and, let’s face it, still speak it best. Yes, English is used all over the world but make no mistake, it’s our language. From Shakespeare to the Teletubbies, English has always been uniquely associated with the heritage and culture of the people of England, particularly those of us who live in Davigdor Road, Brighton.”

Don’t miss Mrs. Hoover’s hilarious brand of comedy-for-an-international-audience.

Mrs. Hoover is carefully and sympathetically managed by language teacher, author and illustrator, Martyn Ford. If you would like to book her to do a show or a talk, contact me at martynaford@ntlworld.com
